When I set out to photograph musicians, it was mainly to get an idea of what was going on in the scene. I wanted to see the ideas that venues known for hosting small, independent musicians, were passing around in regards to style, intensity, pop or alternative, etc. What I actually found was something which I’m still figuring out how to express in a cohesive essay: the bands are interesting, but the fans are not.
I realize that music is entirely subjective, but some of the musicians I started following to multiple shows across multiple different venues were genuinely creating the energy necessary to promote a hyper group of spectators. Yet, what you see is a couple of people dancing, and the rest looking at them like they’re crazy for doing so. I’d like to think that this isn’t all the music scene has to offer in NYC without getting into the big label bands, and I will be picking this series back up to further investigate a world I grew up envying from just across the river in New Jersey.
